Honoring an icon

Posted on Oct. 22, 2007 by Chris Blose

In case it slipped through the cracks — among the Homecoming hoopla and a dominant football performance on Saturday — be sure to check out our story about Arvarh Strickland. He was Mizzou’s first African-American professor in 1969, and now he’s the first African-American to have an academic building here named after him.

After interviewing him (and collecting audio clips of him talking about his experiences), I can see why he was such a popular and engaging teacher. His deep and distinctive voice draws you in, but his no-nonsense honesty and perspective stick with you. At the naming ceremony Friday, you could see evidence of Strickland’s power and influence in the crowd that gathered to honor him. Now thousands of students will attend classes in Strickland Hall. Seems appropriate for a man who, above all, loves to teach.
