Resolution evolution
When it comes to keeping New Year’s resolutions, Mizzou employees have an advantage. Campus programs buoy faculty and staff members’ efforts to stay on track in 2009.
Eat better
A 13-week Weight Watchers at Work class starts at 11:45 a.m. Jan. 14 in room M586 of the MU School of Medicine. Benefits-eligible employees with good attendance may get a 25 percent reimbursement.
Healthy for Life offers a 10-week Eat for Life program beginning with a mandatory orientation at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 9. It uses meditation, yoga and the principles of intuitive eating to help participants build a healthier relationship with food.
Get in shape
Shape Up Missouri, a statewide competitive team fitness program, begins Jan. 19 and runs through April 13. Organizers provide exercise tips, healthful recipes, monthly incentives and prizes.
Quit smoking
Starting this year, Mizzou offers benefits-eligible employees the QuitNet tobacco-cessation program, providing services such as nicotine replacement therapy and support by phone and by e-mail, and Mizzou’s prescription drug program now covers some smoking-cessation medications. Students can get smoking-cessation help through the MU Student Health Center.
Need incentive? Mizzou is tightening its smoking policy starting Jan. 20, prohibiting smoking — with a few exceptions — on MU-owned or MU-leased property within 20 feet of building entrances, exits, windows and fresh-air intake systems. The new policy is part of a larger plan for a smoke-free Mizzou by 2014.

There is a large increase in popularity of farmers markets across the country. Perhaps we are moving toward a more localized, healthy way of living on a national level. People are becoming more aware of the importance of natural ingredients and sustainable agriculture.
